Building Your Listening and Speaking Skills in English

Dates: Mondays 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. for ten weeks (June 22 – August 24)

Level: Intermediate

Description: Improve your listening and speaking ability in English by listening to authentic language situations, participating in speaking activities for use in everyday life, and developing the vocabulary necessary to understand and express yourself in these tasks. (There will be an optional writing component to this course.)


Writing Skills

Dates: Tuesdays 6:00 – 8:30 for ten weeks (June 23 – August 25)

Level: High Beginning to Intermediate

Text: Writing to Communicate Book 1: Paragraphs by Cynthia Boardman ISBN 978-0-13-614191-4

Description: Improve your basic writing skills beginning with paragraphs and progressing to longer compositions. A variety of types of writing will be addressed as well as the mechanics such as punctuation and the various ways of combining ideas into sentences and clauses. In addition to explaining how to write in English, you will be given much opportunity for writing practice, feedback from the teacher, and help on your specific “troublespots.”


Accent Reduction: Improve Your English Pronunciation

Dates: Wednesdays 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. for ten weeks (June 24 – Aug. 26)

Level: High Beginning to Advanced

Description: Improve your pronunciation of English by learning and practicing the important features of the spoken language. Emphasis will be on oral practice on such major points as phrasing groups and stressed/unstressed syllables/words for the correct rhythm of English as well as the correct pronunciation of vowel and consonant sounds. In addition to class practice, you will be given the opportunity to work on your “trouble spots.”


IBT TOEFL: Preparation on Reading, Writing & Vocabulary

Dates: Thursdays 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. for ten weeks (June 25 – Aug. 27)

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Text: iBT Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test (with answer key) by Deborah Phillips ISBN 0-13-205690-9 (with answer key & student CD) Longman Publisher

Description: This class will help you prepare for the iBT TOEFL in the three areas of the test most difficult for the majority of students: reading, writing, and vocabulary.

Speaking Practice: Improve Your English Speaking

Description: Practice speaking in a variety of activities on numerous topics in order to improve your speaking ability and strengthen your confidence in using English. The majority of the class time will be spent on oral practice on such activities as paired dialogues, group tasks, role plays, impromptu conversations, short presentations, discussions, and interviews.

You will be listening to a number of different voices on a variety of topics with the intended goal of improved aural comprehension. Essential to listening, vocabulary development and pronunciation tips will be an added component of this class.
